Straight ticket voting

Straight ticket voting threatens democracy

In 2020, 18,000 voters pulled the straight-ticket ballot choice for one House District race in Hendricks County. This single block of voters outvoted all of the Independent and opposing party voters.
You can think of straight-ticket voting as an accelerator in a car. When you push it, everything jumps forward at the same time and off you go. The missing elements are the steering and braking systems.
* No brakes: In 2020, an incumbent was re-elected that had already served 22 years in office. So, people that believe in term limits did not have a mechanism to vote this candidate out of office.
* No steering wheel: In 2022, the Indiana statehouse was controlled by one party with supermajority representation.
Less than 60% of the voters are from the Republican party. However, they held 78% of the Indiana Senate seats and 71% of the Indiana House seats. All bills go to committees where they are passed to the floor or are blocked. With a supermajority, Republicans chair and control all of the committees.
Straight-ticket voting enables Indiana legislators to take away your personal freedoms and impose their personal beliefs on you. This threat, coupled with an extremist Supreme Court it is terrifyingly dangerous. If your representative is not listening to you, you should vote them out.
* If your wages are falling behind because of government policies, consider who is currently representing you.
* If you are not able to make ends meet to cover housing, transportation, childcare, and healthcare, you may want to look at the other candidate.
* If you are concerned about women's healthcare, marriage, freedom from discrimination, and voting rights pick the candidate that will fight for your rights.
A supermajority in the Indiana General Assembly allows legislators to stop listening to ALL Hoosiers. Straight party voting contributes to the supermajority and non-responsive government.
